First words

Woodsmoke.Something that is beautiful in its transience. Something that is to do with the most primal act of creation - making fire. This act of creation also hints at what it is to be human. In creating fire we warm ourselves and fend off the dark - but there is a necessary act of violence at the heart of it. Woodsmoke, like the phoenix, rises from the burning deadwood.

Fiona and I first talked about creating an imprint after Fiona decided that she wanted us to publish her fourth novel, The Most Beautiful Thing, ourselves. Since then we've thrown back and forth possible imprint names, and the pros and cons of self-publishing.

A lot of the motivation comes from wanting to take responsibility for creating the artifact of the book, as well as the words. Some of it comes from frustration with traditional publishers.

We were walking through Batsford Arboretum a few days ago when we settled on the name. Woodsmoke Press.

As I write this Fiona is going through the manuscript of The Most Beautiful Thing with a red pen.
